Family Friendly Ski Resorts

The family that skis or rides together stays together. There are very few outdoor activities that are as family-friendly as skiing and snowboarding. These sports can be enjoyed by nearly anyone who can walk—from three or four years old to people in their 80’s and even 90’s. Our suggestion is to plan on a long weekend, or better yet, a week. Sign kids and adults up for lessons; non-skiers or riders can snowshoe, ice skate, or have fun at the tubing park. Here are a few of our favorite family-friendly ski resorts in the country.

Snowmass Ski Resort, Colorado

This family-friendly resort is the second-largest ski area in Colorado. A single lift ticket is good for all four ski areas near Aspen (Snowmass, Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain, and Aspen Highlands)—you can take a free shuttle bus between them. In addition to being less expensive than Aspen Mountain, Snowmass has the best terrain for families (and intermediate skiers and riders). There are plenty of beginner runs, as well as intermediate and expert terrain—most of the area is below treeline, so there are always powder stashes to explore. Snowmass boasts 4,406 vertical feet, the most in North America. The best place to stay in Snowmass is the new ski-in/ski-out resort, The Viceroy. The hotel offers exciting snow tubing, a kid’s adventure center with 25,000 square feet of activities, including a climbing gym, snow biking, and family Friday-nights-out with campfires and s’mores.
