Snowmass Snowshoeing

Though hailed as one of the best Colorado ski areas for families and skiers of all levels, Snowmass is more than skiing; you’ll quickly discover this when you embark on a snowshoeing adventure. Snowshoeing options include guided snowshoe tours with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) and exploring on your own.

Guided snowshoe tours with ACES are a blend of snowshoeing and education. ACES Naturalists lead the tours, and during the journey, they open your eyes to all of the subtle signs of life in a winter forest.

The ACES Naturalists identify animal tracks; discuss what kinds of animals are out and about during the cold winter months; and point out signs of flora activity, like tiny seeds resting atop the snow. After this snowshoe tour, you will forever look at a quiet, winter forest with a new set of eyes.

A bonus is the complimentary hot chocolate and cookies supplied by your ACES Naturalist!

When: Daily at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM
Where: Snowmass Mountain at the top of Elk Camp Gondola

Ullr Nights Snowshoe Tour with ACES

Experience a guided snowshoe tour by the light of the stars and moon. On top of their daytime tours, ACES also offers guided snowshoe tours during Ullr Nights on Snowmass Mountain. Ullr Nights is a weekly party—held every Friday at Elk Camp Restaurant and Meadows—that’s all about family-friendly fun; there’s a bonfire for roasting marshmallows, snow tubing, a snow slide, ice skating, snowbike tours, live music, and delicious food.

The ACES Ullr Nights snowshoe tour allows a glimpse into the ecology of Snowmass Mountain at nighttime. It’s a tour like you’ve never experienced before. Gather family and friends into a gondola car on a Friday in winter for a memorable evening under the stars.

When: Every Friday from December through March at 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM
Where: Snowmass Mountain at the top of Elk Camp Gondola

On Your Own

For exploring on your own, the Snowmass Golf Course is the perfect place to begin. There are about six miles of trails to explore, most easy to intermediate. While tromping through the fluffy snow, you’ll enjoy views of Mt. Daly and the Snowmass ski area.

For a vertical challenge, check out the Terminator Trail that winds through the Two Creeks area on Snowmass Mountain. After you catch your breath, you can head back to the golf course, or continue your journey by connecting with the Owl Creek Trail that leads to the Aspen Golf Course.

The next time you’re enjoying a stay in Snowmass, keep the ski boots off for a day or two, and instead, strap on a pair of snowshoes. Then, head out into the wild.
